Partnership to promote environment initiatives through an Internet website

The City of Torrance and the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce partnered to promote environmental initiatives through the establishment and maintenance of an Internet website, www.GreenTorrance.com. The website’s goal is to provide Torrance businesses a comprehensive source for “Go-Green” information.

The City of Torrance endorsed The US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, becoming a “Cool City” in April 2007, pledging to reduce carbon dioxide pollution. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, in order to align with Federal and State initiatives, desired to promote efforts to “go green” to local businesses. As a result, the Chamber approached City officials about joining together to promote energy conservation in Torrance.

By pooling resources, the City and the Chamber, led by the Leadership Torrance Alumni Association (a program of the TACC), partnered with Aurora Enterprises, an information technology solutions provider, to design, develop, implement, update and maintain a portal to disseminate environmental information to small, medium and large-size businesses. The portal website, www.GreenTorrance.com, will inform businesses on information, methods and resources to protect the environment, conserve energy, and save money.

South High School Student Wins GreenTorrance.com Logo Contest

At the January 15, 2008 Torrance City Council meeting, South High Junior, Melissa Macias, was recognized for her creation of the GreenTorrance.com logo.  GreenTorrance.com is an environmental resource for businesses in Torrance and the South Bay created to help them adopt ‘green’ business practices.  In collaboration with TUSD, GreenTorrance.com held a logo contest at the four high schools in order to give the young students a chance to display their creativity and environmental dedication.  Melissa’s logo incorporates environmental concepts with the GreenTorrance.com message flawlessly.  “I participated in the logo contest because I wanted to help the people of Torrance be more aware of the environment,” says Melissa. Melissa works at Centinela Feed and Pet Supplies and hopes to become a veterinarian one day.

The new GreenTorrance.com logo will be placed in businesses that have completed a free energy audit and implemented at least one of the recommendations.
